Established 275 years ago, the Society of Dilettanti has played a pivotal role in the exploration of the ancient Mediterranean. Delighting in the arts of classical antiquity, they found imaginative ways to fulfill the club's motto, "Seria ludo" (serious matters in a playful vein). Lecturer Charles Sebag-Montefiore, current joint secretary of the society, blends history and anecdote in this insider's view of the club's exploits and personalities, from the heyday of classical archaeology in the 19th century up to the present.
